the artist
Jeriel McGinness
“THE ARTIST”…wow, that sounds so pretentious! I’m actually a pretty layed-back guy who has enjoyed making art since childhood. But I’ve never been alone in my creating. Mom always kept my crayon box full (see photo). Santa delivered gifts like Spirograph and a rock tumbler from the JC Penney catalog (JCP catalog..it was a thing..Google it). God’s designs in nature surround and inspire me. My wonderful wife and boys provide encouragement and feedback. Then there’s those 36 years as a middle school art teacher…collaborating with the best colleagues and families…being creative every day with phenomenal kids…who honed my internal radar, enhanced my immune system, dulled my senses to body odor, and stoked my cache of puns and dad jokes, like ‘what do you call a Frenchman wearing sandals…Felipe Flop’. That joke is money, bruh.
Glass fusing grew from my exploration of stained glass and collaborative large scale mosaic installations with colleagues and students where we often used glass and clay. Fusing glass has become my means of creative expression as I begin my retirement years. I retain a bit of whimsy and playfulness in my art, something my students taught me.
Below are some things I’ve scratched, mosaic-ed, fused, photographed, and pieced together that probably say more about me than just words. Thanks for visiting my site. Stay Gucci y’all (we still say that, right?).
